Tucson Clean Cities Coalition helps tackle greenhouse gas emissions at the Super Bowl

Tuscon, Arizona – January 29, 2008 - Tucson Clean Cities Coalition at Pima Association of Governments is assisting FOX Sports with securing hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) for use both internally by FOX, as well as by designated VIPs during Super Bowl XLII festivities in the Phoenix area. FFVs can run on either gasoline or alternative fuel blends, including up to 85 percent ethanol (E85). FOX Sports executives will drive hybrid SUVs and flex-fuel vehicles throughout Super Bowl week.

Alternative fuel vehicles and special low-emission biodiesel fuel will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Super Bowl. “It is exciting to see alternative fuels will be used in such a high profile event, and I am proud to be a part of it,” said Colleen Crowninshield, manager of the Pima Association of Governments’ Clean Cities Program.

Another low carbon initiative is the use of a renewable biodiesel fuel with an emissions reducing additive from ORYXE Energy. The B20 biodiesel, a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel, will be treated with ORYXE LED for biodiesel. This ultra low-emissions fuel will be used in the diesel vehicle shuttle buses operated by a local bus company at the Feb. 3 event.

The low emission fuel and E85 are being provided by Western States Petroleum of Phoenix and ORYXE Energy.

"One of our guiding principles is to promote a healthy environment," said James M. Cleary, ORYXE Energy chairman and chief executive officer. "What better place to showcase ORYXE Energy technology and how it reduces greenhouse gas emissions than the highest profile sporting event in the United States. The NFL's environmental efforts at the Super Bowl will demonstrate that renewable energy is in the mainstream of America's fight for clean air."

For their part, the NFL in partnership with the Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee has maximized recycling at major Super Bowl event venues and contracted for renewable energy from the Salt River Project to power the University of Phoenix Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday and to power the NFL Experience Football Theme Park – the largest public event at the Super Bowl.

The NFL also has projects in place to recover and donate extra prepared food from Super Bowl events, recover and donate all usable materials and supplies from Super Bowl events. And the NFL has developed large reforestation projects (nearly 100 acres in the Rodeo-Chediski burn area) and urban forestry projects at seven local school campuses.
